The Eastern Cape's police's anti-corruption unit has arrested three officers for corruption after they allegedly demanded a bribe from an employer in exchange for the release of his employee, who had been arrested for breaking lockdown regulations.
Police say the officers solicited R1,500 before releasing the suspect without filing any charges after being held for contravening regulations of the Disaster Management Act.
The officers, who are aged between 39 and 43, were charged with corruption and on Monday appeared in the Sterkspruit Magistrate's Court where they were granted bail. The case has been set for trial in Sterkspruit on July 30.
