Ten people were killed and three others left injured when a car they were travelling in rolled at Mntwana location in Elliotdale on Tuesday morning.
The out-of-control bakkie is believed to have been ascending a hill, lost power and "dropped" passengers as it reversed, a well-placed source confirmed to DispatchLIVE on Tuesday.
The passengers, who were on their way to visit a bereaved church member, allegedly jumped off when the vehicle started reversing.
Eastern Cape department of transport spokesperson Khuselwa Rantjie said 10 females occupants were declared dead on scene.
The injured - including the driver - were rushed to Zithulele Hospital.
A case of culpable Homicide will be investigated.
