Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of an East London policeman who was killed in a shootout with suspected cash-in-transit robbers last week, police minister Bheki Cele said.

Sergeant Mzoxolo Gxothani, 41, who was attached to the East London tactical response team (TRT), was one of the respondents to a robbery in Port St John’s.

His funeral was held in Mdantsane Zone 15 on Saturday morning.

Speaking to DispatchLIVE after the funeral, Cele said two suspects were in police custody, while a group of 13 armed suspects were still on the run.

“We have arrested one suspect, he was injured during the robbery and is in hospital under police guard, we also arrested a woman with a large sum of money in KZN and they will lead us to where the other suspects are.”

Gxothani was described by family and colleagues as a “hard working” , and a “loving father”.

He leaves behind his wife and two children aged four and seven.
