A 61-year-old man will appear before the Mdantsane magistrate's court on Thursday for the murder of the Tsholomnqa mother of six.

DispatchLIVE previously reported how the family of Khunjulwa Merile, 45, of Xhama village, who was brutally assaulted and later died at Frere hospital on January 6, had demanded the arrest of the man they believed had beaten her to death.

The family said they watched the man who was allegedly responsible for their relative's deaths sitting about eight houses from theirs as her coffin was lowered to the ground last week.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Khaya Tonjeni on Wednesday confirmed the arrest.

“Police can confirm that a 61-year-old suspect was arrested yesterday[Tuesday]. [He is] facing a charge of murder," Tonjeni said.

The family also claimed that the accused killer was known to have previously killed three other women.

Tonjeni said: “The possibility that [the] suspect may be responsible for more than one murder is part of the investigation."
