The National Assembly is on Thursday electing a new speaker after the position became vacant when Thandi Modise was appointed as the new defence minister.

The ANC has nominated former defence minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula to be the new speaker. The DA is expected to put forward Annelie Lotriet as its candidate.
