Putting a tough 19 months firmly behind it, the Eastern Cape tourism industry formally welcomed summer and the holidays at a launch held at the Sunshine Coast’s Port Alfred on Saturday.

Tracey Putzier, acting chair of the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency, praised the province’s magnificent landscape and coastline which she said provided hope to many people who had lost hope due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Putzier was speaking at Guido’s Restaurant on behalf of economic development, environmental affairs & tourism MEC Mlungisi Mvoko.

“While I was making my way here to Port Alfred I was looking at the abundant natural offering, and just immersed myself in the splendour,” she said.

“The optimist in me felt hopeful, despite the current challenges we are facing, that in the end things will be well for our people, our beloved province, country and the world.”

The tourism industry had been the hardest hit by the pandemic, and the outlook for recovery was difficult because of the increasing Covid-19 numbers despite major vaccination programmes.

The sector was “extremely disheartened” by the discovery of new variants, which placed the country on various red lists.  Putzier said they were now putting their faith in domestic tourism.

Since September 2020, seasonally adjusted income from accommodation had climbed by 56.7% month on month, bringing hope.

People need to follow protocols and standards to ensure the safety of the sector’s workforce and that of travellers in what is the new normal.

The tourism industry has taken steps to capitalise on prospects that would relaunch the industry on a more stable, equitable, and long-term basis.

“These include investment support into facilities like upgrades of our provincial reserves, and sector support.”

Putzier urged everyone to go out and explore, but to do so responsibly.

“Domestic tourism is our bread and butter, we need to go out and explore our backyards.

“I appeal to everyone to stay safe, practise the Covid-19 prevention measures and enjoy leisure and summer activities differently by making safety the number one priority.”

The agency’s CEO, Vuyani Dayimani, was on hand to showcase the Eastern Cape’s beautiful coastline.

He too emphasised safety protocols to avoid activities becoming superspreader events.

Dayimani mentioned a number of summer activities, initiatives, special discounts and affordable deals people could take advantage of this season, and he encouraged people to visit the Eastern Cape because it was so picturesque.

Attractive activities included skydiving, kayaking and sailing.

The department was partnering up with booking agencies to offer an inclusive package to visitors.

“We are trying to link flights with the activities that are available in the Eastern Cape.”
