Former Springbok centre John Gainsford passed away at 08:00 on Wednesday at the age of 77.

Gainsford played 33 Tests for the Springboks between 1960 and 1967.

He was a legend of the Villager Rugby Football Club in Cape Town and represented South Western Districts and Western Province at provincial level.

In total, Gainsford played 71 matches in a Springbok jersey, with 38 of those being tour matches.

Gainsford, who was Springbok No 348, died on the same day as legendary All Black wing Jonah Lomu.
