Former IBF world super-bantamweight king Vuyani “The Beast” Bungu will be celebrated by “Friends of Vuyani Bungu” at a braai function to be held at his place in West Bank this evening.

The event, where all who contributed to Bungu’s career have been invited, is meant to celebrate Bungu’s career that put the name of the Buffalo City Metro and South Africa on the world map.

Bungu, who holds the record for 13 title defences was also recently appointed an International Boxing Organisation (IBO) ambassador in Africa.

Meanwhile another Mdantsane trailblazer who became the first SA female boxing world champion this week captured the imagination of young people during a youth month celebration at NU1.

The event was organised by Mdantsane SAPS in conjunction with Mdabo (Mdantsane Boxing Organisation).

Tenge, in her inspirational speech, shared with the young ones her story of how she went from being just another girl in the dusty streets of the Masizakhe squatter camp in the Mdantsane to international stardom.

“You fight for your dream and not once should you let your circumstances define your destiny and I am a living evidence of that.

“School and sport are the only way to a better life while drugs and alcohol will either lead you to jail or to death,” said Tenge, who is graduating with a Sport Management qualification in September.

“I used to jog in a gravel road but I knew that one day I would become a world champion and it happened because my eye never moved away from the ball.”

Future boxing champs as young as nine years old then took to the ring to showcase their skills with hopes of one day following in Tenge’s footsteps.

Correctional Services also took part in the event with inmates also there to tell their stories.

Tenge, regarding her boxing career said she would be hanging up the gloves soon to turn her focus to administration in the sport also known as sweet science.
