POSITION OVERVIEW

To identify, investigate and write breaking news and in-depth reports for The Herald & Weekend Post.

The position to be filled is that of a crime reporter but the successful candidate would be expected to write across other beats when needed.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES / OUTCOMES

• Produce well-written, relevant, accurate and balanced news stories for print and online;• Produce exclusive and high-quality stories, including investigations and news features;• Establish and maintain communication with contacts with a view to sourcing stories;• Work to established style and deadlines;• Generate multimedia ideas and content; and• Perform any other duty as is reasonably assigned by the News desk.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

• Relevant Degree/Diploma in journalism;• At least 3 years’ experience in journalism;• Excellent news gathering, research and writing skills;• Ability to work accurately under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines;• Excellent English and fluency in a second language;• Unimpeachable integrity;• A solid contact base; and• Ability to travel and work irregular hours.

PERSONAL SKILLS/ATTRIBUTES:• Be self-motivated with an ability to work within a team;• Have a hunger for breaking news and a feel for human interest stories• A valid driver’s licence; and• A good knowledge of greater Port Elizabeth and crime and policing issues in the metropole as well as the province.

The applicant must enjoy fearless reporting in the field and networking with contacts and have the ability to produce fast news as well as in-depth stories. Experience in producing multi-media content will be advantageous.
