When I think of Howard the first thing that comes to mind is “good sport”. He was always, in every way, a good sport: kind, generous, fair, welcoming, warm and so friendly. And I love that English expression for him because there is “sport” in it.

And Howard was so big into his sport. Cricket, Rugby, Football, Tennis, Bowls…. He managed to teach me the rules of cricket and even got me into following it, always supporting everyone who was playing against England.

So many games enjoyed in his company, with a good beer afterwards to celebrate a victory or comment a painful defeat.

An accomplished sportsman himself Howard loved camaraderie and sportsmanship better than trophies.

But for all his friends and his family he now belongs in the Hall of Fame.

Adieu Howard. And thank you, good game.
