The downward trend noticed in last month’s food basket prices has not continued as this month there is a slight increase in most household items.

A kilogram of chicken pieces, which could be obtained at a lower R43 last month, have increased to R48.99, costing the consumer R5.99 more.

A dozen large eggs jumped from R25.58 last month to R29.58 this month, a R4 increase.

A loaf of brown bread went from its R8.99 price last month, increasing slightly to R9.99 this month, a R1 increase.

Mealie meal was the only household item to remain the same price, costing R8.99.

A 750ml bottle of cooking oil and butternut per kilogram were the only two prices to decrease, dropping by 50 cents and R2 respectively.

For the last two years, the Saturday Dispatch has been charting the prices of basic household goods at three different supermarkets. The prices are published on the first weekend of every month.
