A chance to play detective
You can also at the same time enjoy a three-course Moroccan dinner
Colonel Mustard, Mrs White and Professor Plum may not be making an appearance, but Dramsoc’s newest end-of-year production can be likened to a real-life game of Cluedo.
Taking place from December 13 to 15 at the Alexander Playhouse, the show is titled Dinner and Death and will see 25 cast members recreate the thrilling game while a Moroccan inspired three-course meal is served.
“We wanted to do something new, fresh and different. The show is very much a play within a play and starts out with a rehearsal of the opening number of the musical My Fair Lady.
“Each cast member has a different role within the murder mystery, from the actors to the musical director, and each of them will have a motive for the murder,” explained Dramsoc committee member and show director, Jo Stemmet.
She said that the play starts pleasantly until something goes terribly wrong and a murder occurs in the theatre.
The audience will be asked to use their detective skills to solve the crime and reveal the murderer and they will have access to the entire theatre throughout their “investigation”.
“Audience members will be allowed to go backstage and into the dressing rooms and can question anyone they want. We’re all in on it, so the murderer could literally be anywhere and be anybody from the front of house manager to the waitresses and even the chef,” said Stemmet.
The audience will be guided by the production team and stage manager, but each night will be completely different because even the cast members won’t know who the murderer is.
“We have rehearsed a lot, but there will definitely be lots of improvisation each night, because the entire cast will also have to play the game,” said Stemmet.
Chef Dale Benson, who recently returned from 10 years working in the culinary industry in the United States, said that he was really looking forward to being part of this production.
Performances start at 7.30pm and tickets are available at Lee Gold Music at R160 per person.
