Shop with a plan although specials are a big drawcard at this time of the year

With Christmas only three weeks away, retailers’ shelves are heaving with specials, although most of these specials are for foods you would not dream of buying at any other time of the year.
Today’s food basket column takes a look at the everyday items most households would have in their weekly or monthly grocery trolley.
The biggest price drop from last month was seen in eggs – which dropped in price from R28 a dozen in November to R24 a dozen this week.
The biggest increase was seen in chicken - up from R34.99 in November to R37.99 this week.While cooking oil increased by 50c month-on-month to reach R17.99, and milk went up by 70c to reach R11.69, bread came down to R7.49 from R7.99.
The latest figure is what the bread price was for June to October before it faced the shortlived hike in November.Mealie meal, potatoes and butternut prices remain unchanged from last month...
