Former Tru FM presenter Reggie Solani has landed himself a job at South Africa’s leading Xhosa station, Umhlobo Wenene FM.

Solani makes his debut as content producer and distributor on Umhlobo Wenene FM from next month.

Speaking with the Daily Dispatch yesterday, Solani said he was excited to be joining the station.

“This is a dream come true for me. I grew up listening to Umhlobo Wenene FM and for me to be part of this station is a blessing for me,” he said.

Solani will be joining Amaza Ntshanga on the midday show, Sijik’ilanga, as the producer and distributor.

The show’s current producer, Nonala Tose, will take on the job of producing mid-morning show Khanya Gqiyazana, hosted by Lulu Haarmans.

Solani, who will be based at the station’s Johannesburg studio, said he approached Umhlobo Wenene at the beginning of the year and was surprised when they decided to hire him for a prime-time slot.

“Most people start on the graveyard slot but because they know my background in radio, they decided to put me on prime time. This shows a lot of trust from their side and I am going to deliver.”

The King William’s Town-born events MC said he would spend this week familiarising himself with the show.

“I have some ideas already but I need to give myself time.

“I’ve worked for youth stations before but now Umhlobo Wenene has a bigger and more mature audience. I must make sure content appeals to all generations,” he said.

Solani joins the station at a time when it is on a mission to increase its listenership to five million, from 4.6 million.

“I join the station at a critical time. As they aim for five million it means that as a producer I must come up with compelling content for the show. I am ready for the challenge,” he said.

Solani added that he was grateful to the station for believing in him and for giving him an opportunity to spread his wings. “Amaza is one of the most experienced radio presenters and he is humble. I am honoured that I will be working with him on the show,” he said.
