Berita, Yanga taking the airwaves by storm

Singing sensation Berita and rapper Yanga’s collaboration Vesu Yeke has taken the airwaves by storm since its debut three weeks ago.

The pair worked on the song for Coke Studio, a television show which sees musicians from different genres come together to record a song. They have only 48 hours to create their track, with the added pressure of all the ups and inevitable downs caught on camera.

Season two of Coke Studio, which comes to an end on Saturday, started in August.

Berita and Yanga’s track was first aired about three weeks ago and it has already gained a lot of airplay from stations such as UMhlobo Wenene FM and TruFM.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, Berita said she did not think the song would become so popular in such a short space of time.

“It first played on UMhlobo Wenene FM and people were raving about it. I was amazed by the response from the public,” she said. Berita said working with the Queenstown rapper was a new experience.

“I have never done a song with a hip hop artist before. Yanga and I are under the same company and we have been saying we would work together but we never got the opportunity to do so.

“The Coke Studio show gave us an opportunity to finally work together and it was awesome,” she said, adding that she also enjoyed working on the song in two days.

“People know me as an afro-soul artist but this experience gave me something new.”

Yanga said he had a “blast” working with Berita.

The rapper released his first single in 2014 titled, Awuthi’ Yam which featured AKA and Kid X.

He is also featured on AKA’s smash hit, Run Jozi. “Working with Berita was interesting, it was organic and coming up with the song was fun,” he said.

Other artists who have been featured on the show this season include AKA; Nigerian super star, Patoranking; Cassper Nyovest; Diamond Platnumz from Tanzania; Angola’s hottest property Landrick; Ash Muzic; Nasty C with Buffalo Soulja; Fifi Cooper; and Riky Rick.

Following the successful collaboration between Berita and Yanga, a number of people have asked them to make more music together.

But Berita said she was focusing on her third album which is due to be released in March.

“Right now my attention is on my album. I will see next year if we can work on something again,” she said.
