When VIP tickets for global hip-hop star Rick Ross's East London performance sold out on day one, organisers of the Rick Ross Block Party immediately recognised they had something big on their hands.
Rick Ross will be the first international hip-hop act in the city's history to headline an event.
The rapper and songwriter, known for his signature growl and hits like Diced Pineapples and Aston Martin Music, will perform at the Buffalo Park Cricket Stadium on December 22.
Ross will arrive in SA on December 20, followed by the Durban leg of the Block Party Tour on December 21.
His East London performance will conclude the tour.
Event organiser Thulas Mbuyazwe said the Ross performance would be the “first of many” for East London party lovers as there were plans in place to bring another international act in 2020.
“We wanted to bring something fresh and new to the city. We are very excited but nervous to be putting an event of this magnitude together. We are working around the clock to make sure that everything runs as smoothly as possible. This international offering is only the first of many to come for East London. It is about time,” he said.

Ami Faku to shine at Heatwave party
Mbuyazwe, who was the former organiser of the popular Metro FM Heatwave, said the Block Party concept creators had approached him a few years ago about bringing the event to East London.
“At that time we were busy with the Heatwave and wanted to focus our energy on that. When we took a break from the Heatwave, the idea sprang up again and we jumped on it wholeheartedly. So we have partnered with the Block Party to host the East London leg of the tour,” said Mbuyazwe.
He said the national and local line-up would be announced on Friday.
“This is a music festival that will have a diverse musical offering. We have a heavy local offering of artists coupled with a few national artists across the hip-hop, amapiano and house genres, to mention a few. The event starts during the day and we encourage our patrons to come and enjoy live performances, food stalls and some great entertainment on the day,” said Mbuyazwe.
The Rick Ross Block Party tickets are available at Webtickets (Pick n Pay). Mbuyazwe said they would deliberate on the release of more VIP tickets for patrons.
