Using the universal language of music, local hero nominee Siyabulela Madyo raises money to provide much-needed goods to impoverished children from the Ndlambe area.

Held in Port Alfred annually every December, the Ndlambe Music Festival provides Madyo with an income, but also helps him to raise money so that he can reach his goal of bettering the lives of as many local children as possible.

He uses a portion of the money raised at each event to give back to his community.

This year, the music festival was able to raise funds for 50 pupils chosen from 10 local schools, who were provided with shoes, sanitary towels and deodorant.

Madyo has organised the event since 2018, apart from the interruption of activities caused by Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.

He works with officials from Ndlambe municipality to identify recipients.

“More than 6,000 people attend the event. I share the revenue from ticket sales with the underprivileged communities of Ndlambe.”

Madyo said the residents’ support had been incredible, and there had always been a need to return and show gratitude.

The entrepreneur said he was not planning to stop giving and his aim was to become a beacon of hope to those who had lost hope.

According to Madyo, his major goal is to restore the dignity of pupils who have nothing, or very little.

“People have provided support, and I feel like we owe them a token of appreciation. Schools identify pupils who come from underprivileged homes, and then we distribute what we have.”

He described giving back as a  passion.

Madyo said he rested well, as knowing he had touched the lives of those who could afford so little was amazing.

“It warms my heart every day to know I have had an effect on someone’s life.

“Giving goes hand in hand with a good heart; when you have a good heart, you have humanity. And when others show you they care, show them you care as well.

“I know that when a child from an impoverished family receives a present, I am not the only one who sleeps happily; more than 50 parents and siblings feel special, and they feel better,” he said.
