10 deaths reported in EL in 24 hours

THE festive season kicked off on a bad note in East London when within 24-hours between Saturday and yesterday, 10 people died in various incidents.

The first death was that of a pedestrian, a 54-year-old Berea woman, who was hit and killed by an allegedly drunk driver in Pearce Street just after 7am on Saturday. The driver was arrested on charges of drunk driving and culpable homicide.

He is due to appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court today.

Meanwhile, the body of a 40-year-old man was discovered on Saturday night in Factory Road, North End, with multiple stab wounds. Police were called to the scene but could not find any suspects.

Four people died when an Orange Grove shack in which they were sleeping caught fire early yesterday.

The cause of the fire is still unknown and an inquest docket was opened.

A 20-year-old man died in Oxford Street yesterday morning when he reportedly jumped out of a moving taxi.

Police said the man died when a vehicle driving behind the taxi collided with him. It failed to stop and drove off.

In a separate incident yesterday two people were killed when the vehicle in they were travelling overturned in Buffalo Pass Road near Scenery Park.

Three other passengers in the vehicle were rushed to Frere Hospital where their condition was described as stable.

A case of culpable homicide was opened against the driver.

The body of a five-year-old boy, presumed drowned on Saturday afternoon near the East London Industrial Development Zone, was also recovered yesterday morning.

Police said the boy, believed to be from Leaches Bay, drowned in a manhole while playing with other children.

An inquest docket was opened.
