Funky East Londoners enjoy first Glow Run

MORE than 500 funky East Londoners of all ages gathered at the East London Golf Club on Saturday night decked out with ultra-violet paint for the city’s first Glow Run.

Children as young as four accompanied their parents as they lined up for the much anticipated 5km run, which started at 7.30pm along the streets of Stirling.

Although organisers hoped for about 1000 people to take part, organiser Wayne Mitchell said they had a turnout of about 600.

“On Friday we had around 300 people and from that we now have a turnout of about 600 people including the spectators and I think we have done quite well.

“We will definitely bring it back to East London,” he said.

Buffalo City traffic officers were hard at work during the race keeping the streets of Bunkers Hill safe as those who participated did two 2.5km laps.

Sisters Nikita and Natasha Van Schalkwyk from Amalinda said the race had kick-started their festive season.

Natasha, 21, said: “We heard about the run during the year and we registered immediately. It’s exciting and accommodates everyone from family to friends. It is definitely something I would do again.”

Roawyne Pearce from Gonubie loved the fact that the race was “do-able”.

Although there was no overall winner, many people walked away with prizes.

“We had great prizes from the most glowing person of the night, the most crazily dressed and the best dancer of the night, and there were also some random prizes.

“We had a great venue and beautiful weather,” said organiser Vincent Mnyameni.

Spectator Tayla Fegan enjoyed the party but felt more advertising was needed. — mamelag@dispatch.co.za
