Paramedic delivers baby at EL show

A PARAMEDIC based at the East London Show helped deliver a baby when a woman went into labour just outside the venue.

Dynamic Emergency Services paramedic Melissa Van Rooyen was alerted about the mother-to-be by security guards at the show.

Van Rooyen said she was on standby at the show when the guard ran to tell her about the woman.

The woman, who lives nearby, had been walking past a back entrance to the East London Show Grounds with some friends on Saturday afternoon.

“This was her fourth baby and I knew it would come fast,” said Van Rooyen.

By the time Van Rooyen arrived, Lindeka Gana was already in the final stages of labour. Van Rooyen began preparing for the birth and put up a drip.

“The little one came very quickly,” said Van Rooyen, healthy.

Women who witnessed the birth cheered Gana on. The baby boy and his mother were then rushed to Frere Hospital.
