Man killed when shipping container lands on him

QUEENSTOWN police have opened an inquest docket after a shipping container blew over and landed on top of a man.

The accident happened shortly after midday outside a shopping centre in Komani Street.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch earlier today, Queenstown police spokeswoman Lieutenant Phumzile Makaula confirmed the accident.

“The police are investigating this case after strong winds blew the container and left three people injured and the fourth dead. The dead person was standing next to the container at the time.”

She said the name of the deceased had not yet been released.

According to Makaula, a cellphone shop was being operated from the container.

The South African Weather Services warned of strong winds in the eastern half of the province.  Queenstown, Cradock and Aliwal North were some of the areas which were highlighted.
