Granny dies on pavement

EARLY morning commuters were shocked yesterday when they came across the body of a 70-year-old granny on the pavement of East London’s Commercial Road.

The woman, who cannot be identified as not all her family have been notified of her death, apparently died on her way to work at around 6am.

She reportedly died of natural causes after collapsing in the road.

She had come from Highway Gardens in Amalinda and had been heading to work in East London.

Workers driving and walking past her stared in shock as the woman’s body was left on the road.

It was only when a neighbour from Tsholomnqa village saw her that police were called to the scene to help.

Nomachina Mafunda said she identified the woman and found her with no injuries to her body.

“I saw her while I was also going to work. I thought I recognised her and when I came close it really was her.

“It was very shocking to see her like that because it is not every day that you see a woman just lying on the road without any injuries,” Mafunda said.

Police spokesman Captain Stephen Marais confirmed the woman had suffered no injuries and had died of natural causes.

The woman’s daughter yesterday she said her mother had high blood pressure, diabetes and heart problems.

“I got the call around 7am and I was shocked because she had just left the house at 6.20am. She had complained of being tired on Monday but it is very difficult to stop an elderly person when she has made up her mind,” said her distraught daughter. — mamelag@dispatch.co.za
