About 6000 COSATU members began marching from the old Putco bus depot to the finance department and the department of public service and administration in the Pretoria CBD on Thursday morning.

“This is the first bullet to the government. When we get to the DPSA‚ we will make them see that 10% is not unreasonable‚” said National Education‚ Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) general secretary Vusi Monyela.

The march was at one stage temporarily halted because more busses arrived with members wishing to join the march.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) was hoping to have 10000 members in tow when they deliver their memorandum of demands to government.

The march comes after a seven-month-long wage negotiation deadlock between the unions and government.

The conciliation process will run until May 4 when an agreement must be reached or strikes may ensue.

Unions say the offer of 5.8% is “arrogant“.

They are demanding a 10% increase in wages as well as R1500 in housing subsidies.

Government’s housing allowance offer sits at R1100.

A heavy police presence was on the scene on Thursday morning‚ including members of the SAPS‚ Tshwane Metro Police Department and the Public Order Policing Unit. – The Times
