Relative cries as rapist gets life sentence

A rapist's relative broke down and screamed uncontrollably in the East London High Court this week when he was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a two-year-old girl.

The Buffalo Flats man cannot be named because he is related to the preschooler.

In his plea explanation, the man claimed the child only sat on a sofa after he had masturbated on it, but when he took to the witness stand, he claimed he had masturbated in front of the child when he was aroused by footage on the TV.

He pleaded not guilty.

He told the court that his DNA “fell” on the child and that he saw nothing wrong with masturbating in front of her.

Acting judge Simthembile Mgxaji found the man guilty in October this year for the crime which took place last year.

The judge wrote: “The circumstantial web is so tight and overwhelming that it permits no other way than the accused being the person who raped the child. There exists no possibility of his version being possibly true. His version of masturbation and his sperm just landing on the child is manifestly false and falls to be rejected by this court.”

In delivering sentence this week, Mgxaji called the rape premeditated.

“He fetched the child intentionally to molest her, to please his sexual lust. She is young now, but there is no doubt that this affected her. Rape has enduring, in not eternal, effects on a person,” Mgxaji said.

As Mgxaji finished handing down the sentence, one of the man’s female relatives screamed out loud and had to be escorted out.

Her screams could still be heard from the passage. — siyab@dispatch.co.za
