VETERAN Eastern Cape actress Nomhle Nkonyeni accepted an award at the weekend for her lifetime contribution to arts and culture in the province.

Nkonyeni has appeared in numerous television productions, including Mzansi, Tsha Tsha and the 2007 mini-series Society. She also appeared in the 2004 feature film Red Dust.

The second annual Arts and Culture Awards ceremony, hosted by the department of sports, recreation, arts and culture at the Guild Theatre on Saturday evening recognised 44 artists, 20 of whom were nominated by the public; 24 were selected by the department’s MEC, Pemmy Majodina.

The artists, ranging from musicians and actors to radio DJs and writers, received customised trophies bearing the coat of arms of the Eastern Cape.

The MEC’s special recognition award went to Mount Fletcher-born gospel singer Butho Vuthela. It was his seventh award this year.

“Nothing beats being appreciated at home. This award humbles me, it shows that the MEC and her department have their eye on the talents in the Eastern Cape,” said Vuthela. Among his other awards this year are a South African Traditional Music Achievement award and a Gospel Crown awards.

Majodina said: “We have artists in the province who go out and receive awards nationally but when they came home there is no one to say ‘well done’ to them. This is the little we can do to show appreciation for their work.” The MEC said she compiled her list of winners through a stringent process that required her to look at those artists who had won numerous awards nationally.

She also gave a boost to 20 developing crafters when she handed over equipment such as music mixing systems, industrial sewing machines and sewing materials.
