A sex worker said she registered for the local government elections in Bloemfontein this past weekend so that she could vote for a politician who will create other work opportunities for her.
News24 visited at least six voter registration stations in the Free State city on Sunday, where voters trickled in at a slow pace.
At most of the stations, officials sat and waited for residents, saying they hoped the turn-out would increase as the day progressed.
A 37-year-old sex worker from Dinaweng outside Bloemfontein, who wished to remain anonymous, said she had registered to vote, hoping it would change her situation.
"I don’t like working as a prostitute. I am hoping that my vote will give me an opportunity to leave this life behind," she said.
The woman said she has been a sex worker for more than seven years.
"My children think that I am a domestic worker and that is fine. But my main concern now is to get a decent job. I registered so that my children can have a better future."
Another woman, also from Dinaweng said her vote was not going to make a difference.
"I am not registering to vote because there is no use. They have been preaching jobs and there is still nothing even today," she said.
Meanwhile, in Mangaung, the chairperson of the Economic Freedom Fighters in Ward 19, Michael Motloung, said he was excited by the number of young people who had registered to vote since Saturday.
"Today is very slow, but we have registered more young people yesterday and today and that for us is amazing," he said.
