After taking a long break from appearing on the small screen, KwaBhaca-born actress Noxolo Maqashalala is in the lead role in a new drama series that starts next month.

Many will remember Maqashalala for her lead role as Viwe in the 2003 SABC1 youth drama series Tsha Tsha. That series lasted for three seasons, during which Maqashalala continued playing the lead role.

In 2010 Maqashalala took on the role of Mandisa in Intersexions, and appeared in shows such as Generations, Rhythm City and Mzansi Love.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, Maqashalala said she was more interested in behind-the-scenes work these days. “I know I haven’t been on TV for a while now but that’s because I’m behind the scenes. I am training as a director on our current set,” she said.

Maqashalala is in Durban for the shooting of The Kingdom – UkhaKhayi – a new drama series about the AmaBhaca and AmaMpondomise tribes.

“I have been doing a lot of writing and producing. For now I am focusing on this production but as soon as I am done, I will be starting my own production company,” she said.

Apart from doing behind-the scenes work, Maqashalala said she used her time away from the limelight to go on an internal journey. “Sometimes it’s good to take a step back from everything and focus on yourself.

“Above everything else that I do, I am a child of God, and that is the most important thing for me. I have been learning to hear the voice of God, and becoming who He says I am. It has been an amazing journey,” she said.

In the upcoming series Maqashalala takes on the role of Nopasika – the wife of Chief Jezebovu in the show. “It feels good to be in front of the camera again. I am enjoying playing the role of Nopasika; she is the total opposite of me. She is the municipal manager who has no morals whatsoever; she is daring. I love playing her.

“People are going to love it . The team has another five weeks left before the show wraps up.

The new show also features the likes of Chuman Pan from Ashes to Ashes, Mncedisi Shabangu and Melusi Yeni. It starts on April 5 on e.tv.
