Tru-talent search for local stars

Youth radio station Tru FM is back with a mission to unearth new and raw talent in the province.

The station kicked off its latest Tru- Talent search competition at the weekend, with auditions in Mdantsane, for undiscovered presenters and performers.

Tru FM’s marketing manager Sbongi Ngcobo said auditions would be held in nine towns, with two acts from each town being selected for the grand finale in October.

On Saturday singers, dancers and potential presenters battled it out in front of a panel of judges at the Mdantsane City shopping mall.

Ngcobo said this leg of the auditions was in partnership with the mall’s own ongoing talent search competition.

The partnership would extend until the end of the second round of the Mdantsane auditions.

She said Mdantsane contestants who impressed the judges in each category would go through to the finals on Saturday, when they stand the chance to win their share of R10000 in prize money.

“Then the mall’s involvement is over, and the winners will go on to represent Mdantsane at the grand finale; while the auditions move on to other towns,” she said.

Ngcobo said the competition also sought to address issues facing the youth such as unemployment and education.

“Once we have selected finalists from all the towns, they taken for workshops that cover everything from how to be a presenter, how to use your voice, what important things you need to note when you perform on stage, and so forth.”

She said the most important aspect of the competition was retaining talent within the province, adding that three of their former competition participants were now employed full-time by the station.

Last year’s winner, Zokwanda LoveJoy Slara, said when she entered she had been trying for eight year to get into radio.

“So when I made the finals, I held on to the opportunity for dear life because I knew it was my only shot and now I have my own show that is doing really well,” said Slara.

Winners will get a recording deal and a presenting contract with the station, and dancers will be hired for events and promotions.

Auditions will be held next in PE, Fort Beaufort, Komani Grahamstown, Butterworth, Mthatha, East London and Bhisho.
