UFH beats queues with web online applications

The University of Fort Hare (UFH) has launched its first online application system to thousands of students who can now enrol using their cellphones or tablets, to avoid long queues.

The system went live yesterday – an hour after its launch – at an event described as a significant milestone for the university and the community it serves.

UFH student administration and registration manager, Musawenkosi Gcilitshana, said the first phase of the system will focus on enrolling first-time students, and anyone, who had never studied at UFH or applied for undergraduate programmes in the past.

Gcilitshana said the online application process took only five to eight minutes to complete.

“As an institution, we will save on paper and time.

“We normally receive more than 26000 applications for capturing and processing which delayed the application and enrolment process,” Gcilitshana said.

SRC president Bulali Rawana said it was a great achievement and they were proud as UFH students in the same year the institution celebrated its 100th anniversary.

“In the past, prospective students had to physically come to the university and submit their applications and, as such, they had to bear all the inconveniences that come with that, let alone struggling to get hold of the application form itself.

“Now everything is just at your fingertips.

“We also believe this to be a great investment as far as application forms’ printing costs are concerned.

“However, we are aware of the technological challenges that our society still faces,” Rawana said.

The online application site also provides information on where and how to apply for financial aid, a student guide and enables applicants to check the status of their application with a five- digit pin.

“We would also encourage applicants to use this opportunity as it is free, while in the manual application you will still have to pay the non-refundable R120 application fee,” Gcilitshana said.
