Little is known about East London businessman Jean du Plessis, the brains behind SKG Properties.

Du Plessis, who maintains a low media profile, runs his company from offices located at Beacon Bay Crossing.

According to its business profile, SKG commenced operations in 2000, although it was originally named Slip Knot Investments 6 (Pty) Ltd, a shelf company at the time.

The name was changed to SKG Properties, an acronym for Slip Knot Group.

Du Plessis lives in Beacon Bay and is said to own several supercars. He and his wife Ronel also run an upmarket B&B overlooking the Nahoon River.

Du Plessis is no stranger to controversy. His Beacon Bay Crossing development, where a mall and hotel are being built, has previously come under fire from residents of Nompumelelo township who complained their houses were showing cracks due to work at the site.

The Daily Dispatch reported earlier this year that Buffalo City Metro wanted a court to order construction work at the site halted and all buildings without approved plans demolished.

In 2014, Dean de Villiers of ESDA Properties took Du Plessis to court regarding the Amathole District Municipality office building tender. Du Plessis won and ADM now leases space at his Chiselhurst office complex.

His company has also clashed with other developers such as True Group. — bonganif@dispatch.co.za
