Three suspects arrested for bishop's murder

Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of popular Mthatha Bishop Thembinkosi Fandaleki.

The 54-year-old clergyman, who served as bishop of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa 's(MCSA) Clarkebury district, died from a single gunshot wound to his chest on July 31.

Mthatha police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela confirmed that three suspects, aged between 22 and 30 years, were arrested at a house in the city between two popular shopping malls on Tuesday.

"We recovered two 9mm pistols during the arrests," he said.

Eastern Cape Provincial Council of Churches president Bishop Andile Mbete meanwhile said as religious leaders, they never lost faith in the police's ability to crack the case.

Fandaleki was laid to rest in KwaBhaca on Thursday last week.

The suspects are due to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate's Court on charges of murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition on Thursday.
