Pearl to unleash musical talent
The Debenek village singer released her first single titled Ungowam last week and is already overwhelmed by the response she has been getting since.
Pearl, whose real name is Phelisa Sonjica, said she did not expect people to fall in love with her new single.
“Most people know me as a gospel singer and I was not sure how they would receive my new sound but they love it. It’s amazing,” she said, adding that she was signed under the Mdantsane-based label, SNH Productions.
Sonjica was one of the few Eastern Cape singers who got the Idols SA golden tickets from the Port Elizabeth mobile auditions. She was eliminated on the group round performance during theatre week. “They didn’t tell me why they eliminated our group. As far as I know we didn’t do anything wrong but I am grateful for the experience.
“I have learned a lot from working with professional musicians such as Ray J and I will implement everything in my new journey,” she said.
Last year Sonjica was part of the Eastern Cape choir on the Mzansi Magic competition Clash of the Choirs. Their choir master was the Easy to Love hitmaker Bucie.
“My focus now is growing my brand and that is why the song is for free. We could have put it up on iTunes but I wanted people to get to know me first,” she said.
Sonjica said she started singing at Sunday School and has never looked back.
“Music has always been part of our family because of my grandparents involvement in the ministry. I remember as a kid I would invite my friends over to watch me perform songs by Rebecca Malope and Brenda Fassie. I loved performing,” she said.
The songstress is also part of the award-winning gospel group Zama and the Voice Ministries headed by Zama Ntshona.
“In 2009 I was part of the Lali Boys and that is where I got to perform at carnivals around Buffalo City Metro and I knew this is what I want to do for a living,” she said, adding that she was also a member of the worship team at Uloyiso Community Church.
“Gospel music has always been my safe space but with joining SNH I realised that I don’t have to do gospel. This is an afro-soul song and I think this is the route I will be taking now,” she said.
