Hundreds of Eastern Cape UDM members yesterday left for Johannesburg to join thousands more for the party’s 20th anniversary celebrations.

The party turned 20 on Wednesday, but holds its celebrations today at Gallagher Estate in Midrand.

UDM Eastern Cape spokesman Mabandla Gogo said the party had come a long way and was vital for the protection of the democratic country that South Africa had become.

“The party has always stood for proper governance and service delivery and has over the years intensified its fight against corruption.”

Launched on September 27 at the World Trade Centre in Kempton Park in 1997, the UDM has become one of the major key players in SA politics with two strongholds in the Northern and Eastern Cape. The formation of the UDM emanated from the expulsion of one of its founding members, Bantu Holomisa, from the ANC.
