Xhosa carnival to rock Great Place
Launched by Ama-
Xhosa King Mpendulo Zwelonke Sigcawu, the event will have two components – the Xhosa Carnival Concert and Xhosa Carnival Seminar.
The line-up of crowd-pullers includes Zahara, Ntando Bangani, Betusile, Amawele KaMamTshawe and string of local artists, including Sweet Inspiration.
Actress Brenda Ngxoli, best known for her role as Vuyo in the SABC1 drama series Home Affairs and Umhlobo Wenene FM maskandi DJ and Satma-award winner Monwbisi Mbangi – better known as Gudl’abatshakazi – will be the emcees.
The free-entry event aims to be the flagship of the Xhosa Royal household and the pride of the Xhosa people.
“The Xhosa Carnival will become a permanent fixture on the Eastern Cape calendar,” said Nandi Mtsokoba, organiser of the carnival.
Mtsokoba said they hoped to promote a greater understanding of the Xhosa culture.
“This will be achieved by creating and delivering an integrated cultural programme packed with traditional performances, showcases and inspirational talks, along with festive season messages from local dignitaries,” she said.
“As custodian of the Xhosa culture, customs and tradition, the Royal household has a role to play as a change agent to facilitate the integration and promotion of the Xhosa culture within the local Xhosa communities, the province and the country as a whole,” said the king.
The monarch hopes the event, expected to draw up to 6000 people, will be another vehicle to improve the moral fibre of the youth of Nqandu, which has been ravaged by crime. Alcohol and dangerous weapons will not be allowed into the venue. The concert will start at 8am until 8pm while the seminar will start at 10am until midday. — firstname.lastname@example.org
