Couple found shot dead in their car in a forest

The community of Stutterheim is in shock following the killing of a nurse, apparently at the hands of her husband who then turned the gun around and shot himself.

The incident took place on Friday. Babalwa Mabinda, 36, of Kubisi village outside Stutterheim, was shot dead, seemingly by her husband, Xola Bangana, 42.

Their bodies were found inside their white Toyota Condor SUV by the Stutterheim police station with gunshot wounds, on a gravel road inside a forest.

The two had been married for 10 years and had children, said Mabinda’s brother Vusumzi Mabinda. He would not say how many or what their ages were.

“All I can say is that the incident was shocking and unacceptable, but as family we cannot comment further or point fingers at anyone,” he said yesterday.

King William’s Town police spokeswoman Captain Siphokazi Mawisa said the Stutterheim police have opened an inquest and a murder case following the incident. Mawisa said an RAP 9mm pistol was found at the scene.

Eastern Cape health MEC Dr Phumza Dyantyi has expressed shock following the slaying of one of the department’s “committed” and “dedicated” workers.

Dyantyi said: “The department has lost a real servant of the people and we would like to send our sincere condolences to her friends, colleagues and relatives.”

Provincial health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said Mabinda had just obtained a full bursary to study clinical science at the Nelson Mandela University in PE.

Kupelo said Mabinda had been working at Kubusi clinic for six years. Mabinda had joined the clinic on a voluntary basis as a community worker in 2012 and rose through the ranks to become a full-time nurse, Kupelo said.

“There was a time where she had to serve as an acting clinic manager at the clinic due to her commitment,” said Kupelo. — malibongwed@dispatch.co.za
