Sterkstroom school burns down

John Voster High School in Sterkstroom burnt down in the early hours of Wednesday.
DA councillor in Sterkstroom Lindy Haggard said she was woken at 2am on Wednesday morning with the news that the school was on fire and the police were alerted.
“This is the third fire in Sterkstroom in the last five weeks. When the fire truck arrived the hydrants were dry and it could not do a thing to curb the spread of the fire,” she said.
She said when the water was turned on by Chris Hani District Municipality the presure was too weak to assist in extinguishing the fire.
Department of education spokesperson Malibongwe Mtima said normally in situations like these, they would utilise local schools and halls to house those writing exams.
“As part of learning for examinations we are always mindful that things like these can happen. We say in situation like these we utilise the local municipality to make sure they provide the help. We will speak with the municipality, business chamber and local schools and check how they can help us.
For now it is important to sit in a meeting and say what has to happen,” he said.
