Bail for controversial lawyer in fraud case
Controversial Eastern Cape lawyer Zuko Nonxuba has been granted R80,000 bail on Thursday by the Mthatha magistrate's court after he was nabbed by the Hawks on Wednesday.
Nonxuba, who was arrested for fraud amounting to R30-million, is not new to controversy after the Grahamstown High Court in 2018 ordered him and another advocate to pay back a substantial amount of money to a client they assisted in a medical negligence claim.
On Wednesday he was arrested for another claim after the Hawks discovered that in 2013 and 2016 he filed a bogus medico-legal claims on behalf of mothers.
βIt is understood that in 2013 and 2016 the suspect allegedly submitted a false claim to the Department of Health on behalf of a mother, asserting that she gave birth to a child who suffered severe injuries due to negligence by the nurses,β said Hawks national spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.
One of the bail conditions is that he must surrender his passport no later than next week Friday...
