Nine arrested as EL CBD erupts in mass protest action over unpaid and delayed payment of NSFAS allowances

Central East London experienced major traffic disruption on Friday from protesting Walter Sisulu University (WSU) students.
The protestors are demanding they be paid their NSFAS allowances.
The protest took a violent turn on Thursday night when students blockaded streets in the East London suburb of Southernwood with burning objects, including beds and mattresses. Nine students were arrested in the city on Thursday night, while three were arrested in Mthatha.
On Friday morning, traffic flow in the East London CBD was interrupted as thousands of students marched up Oxford Street and more materials were burnt.
Students who are NSFAS beneficiaries are supposed to receive book and food allowances, but so far only book allowances have been distributed and not all students received these.
Meanwhile the university made a blunder by duplicating payments. University spokesperson Yonela Tukwayo on Thursday admitted the error.
“Yes, there was an error in duplication of payments to some students,” Tukwayo said.
She said a communication had been sent to affected students to inform them about the duplication and request that they contact the financial aid office to discuss a future offset or how they would refund the university...
