‘We’ll be dancing in heaven one day’: murdered farmer’s daughter

Annelie Wessels says if she had a chance to tell her father one thing before he died in a farm attack on Bonnievale in the Western Cape on Monday, it would have been how much she loved him and the fond memories they shared.
Tool and his wife, Liezel Wessels, both 55, were attacked on their farm Kapteinsdrif on Monday night.
Wessels was shot dead while Liezel was stabbed in the chest after at least four suspects broke into their house.
His daughter, Annelie, told Times Select the family was still struggling to make peace with her father’s death.
“The family is taking it really hard. My mother and father have both big families so it is very sad and they are taking it very hard,” Annelie said.
The 23-year-old said she and her sister Jana were at the University of Stellenbosch when they received the news.
“My mother somehow found a way to get to the computer and sent out e-mails to ask for help. I don’t know when it was sent out but it was early in the evening. I only received my e-mail later that evening,” she said.
She said she received her mother’s frantic e-mail just after midnight. She immediately phoned the Bonnievale police station, but they were already combing the scene.
Her mother, who is still in hospital, had also been burnt with boiling water during the robbery.
“They left her for dead in the house, but she later regained consciousness, got into the car and went to go look for help.”
She managed to get help from a neighbouring farm who alerted the police.
She said they were only informed at 1am on Tuesday that their father’s body had been found near the farmhouse.
Annelie said she will forever cling to the fond memories they shared. She described her father as a cheerful, friendly person who loved making jokes and being around people.
“I received lots of messages from people who said they don’t know me, but my father was MC at their weddings.
“If I could tell him one thing before he died, I would tell him that I love him very much and that I know we will be dancing in heaven one day. My father loved dancing,” Annelie said, fighting back her tears.
On Wednesday morning, police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut said a teenager was taken into custody for questioning about the murder and attempted murder.
It is believed that a 19-year-old arrested with the rifle on Tuesday is a Bonnievale local.
“The suspect is scheduled to make a court appearance once he has been charged. The other suspects involved in the incident are yet to be arrested,” Traut said...
