Butterworth a ghost town after police quell protests

The usually bustling and congested Butterworth CBD is deserted.

Protests early on Tuesday saw police saying they could not guarantee the safety of traffic on the N2.

Stones were being thrown.

Later in the day the town was silent and the mood sullen.

Earlier, streets were closed with while the normally congested streets, including the N2 freeway towards Mthatha and KZN, were left deserted, with only burning tyres, wood, stones and other debris.

Traffic on the N2 was also thin while taxis were not operating and hawkers did little or no trade.

The only life around town was at a local magistrates court, where a number of protesters  from surrounding townships and villages appeared after they were arrested for public violence on Monday night.
