An Eastern Cape world boxing and karate female champion has been shot and killed, allegedly a police officer.

The incident took place on the Voortrekker Road towards Mdantsane following a high speed chase on Friday at around 2pm.

The 37-year-old Tactical Response Team officer also shot and wounded the 25-year-old woman’s mother.

Their names have been withheld as their next of kin have not been notified.

East London police spokesperson Captain Hazel Mqala said the wounded woman was rushed to hospital.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) officers were on the scene alongside a hoard of visible police members.

When the Dispatch arrived on the scene, the champion’s VW GTI 7 had fallen into a roadside ditch.

The officer is being hunted down by members of his own unit.  He remains at large. For more on this story, get tomorrow’s Daily Dispatch newspaper.
