Four people were killed and seven seriously injured when a minibus taxi plunged into a river in Willowvale in the early hours of Wednesday.

The driver was one of those killed when the taxi overturned at Nkelekethe village and rolled into the Shixini River.

Police spokesperson Captain, Jackson Mantha said police were investigating a case of culpable homicide.

“The injured passengers were all rushed to Butterworth Hospital. The cause of the accident is not known at this point in time but Willowvale police detectives are investigating,” Manatha said.

“The ages of the deceased and the injured are not yet known. The identities of the deceased are still being withheld as not all their relatives have been informed of their deaths.”

Manatha could not say exactly what time the accident occurred, but said he received information shortly after 8am.

Acting Eastern Cape provincial commissioner Major-General Andries Swart passed on his condolences to all the families of the deceased, and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The accident came only two days after four people died and 15 were seriously injured when a Toyota Quantum taxi collided with a sedan on the N2 in East London on Monday.
