A 45 year-old suspected serial rapist and murderer, who allegedly terrorised an Eastern Cape community, was finally arrested by the police this week. The Qumbu man was nabbed hiding in nearby Ntabankulu at about 1am on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Khaya Tonjeni said: “The suspect was sought for three rapes and murders which occurred in Mvumelwano where other two women aged between 34 and 35 years were also raped and murdered. He was arrested while hiding in house in Ntabankuluat about 1am on Tuesday,” he said.

He will appear before Qumbu magistrate’s court soon, Tonjeni said.

Last month about 1,000 residents from Mvumelwano marched to the police station, demanding that the police arrest the man, saying if he was not stopped in his tracks, he would strike again. O R Tambo district commissioner, Major-General Mhlangenqaba Kanuka applauded the arrest.

“We must root out all that make our communities not feel safe. Let them face the might of law,” said Kanuka.
