Two men who hijacked a vehicle after making a daring escape from the Zwelitsha Magistrate’s Court have each received 20 years in prison for their crimes.

Nkosana Mpe, 37, and Lwandile Lolwana, 32, were sentenced in the East London Regional Court on Friday on charges of hijacking and illegal possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

They had in May 2017 overpowered guards at the Zwelitsha court before escaping.

They were already in jail for murder and rape, and new charges were to be added before they made their daring escape.

A huge manhunt was launched. While on the run, Mpe and Lolwana hijacked a navy blue Toyota Avanza in Buffalo Flats, East London.

When the vehicle was spotted on Settlers Way, police were alerted and swiftly moved in.

Const Ruan Herselman and WO Gavin Smith heard that the vehicle was heading towards the Mount Coke Road in the direction of King William’s Town.

During a high-speed chase, the hijacked Avanza collided with a truck, and the two suspects were arrested.

Eastern Cape police said in a statement that they had been informed that Mpe and Lolwana had each received 20-year prison terms.

They will appear shortly in the Zwelitsha court on the escape charges.
