University of Fort Hare students shut down the Alice campus on Tuesday, vowing to keep it closed until all their demands were met by Vice-Chancellor Sakhela Buhlungu.

The students took the decision to embark on a mass action in a mass meeting on Monday evening.

After the mass meeting last night, students started with demonstrations blocking the part of R63 in front of the university. A large group of students singing anti-Buhlungu songs demonstrated around campus demanding all students join them.

All academic activities have been disrupted.

In an SRC statement that refers to Buhlungu as an “outgoing VC” the SRC said: “The SRC is annoyed by the behaviour of the Vice Chancellor who acts like a mini God or a deputy Jesus of some sort. The Vice Chancellor continue to undermine the agreements reached by the South African Union of Students, USAF and the Minister Dr Blade Nzimande,” said the SRC.
