Police have been deployed in East London's CBD after University of Fort Hare student protesters took to the city's streets, blocking them with rubble and lighting fires.
One third-year student, who asked to remain anonymous, said they were protesting against the exclusion of 3 000 students. She claimed the students were kicked out over unpaid registration fees in both Alice and East London campuses.
“The SRC has failed us because not one of them is here,” the student told DispatchLIVE.
One balaclava-clad student shouted “manyoronyoro ndini” [traitors] at police after they used pepper spray to disperse a group of students.
