Mango airlines is apparently stepping in to fill the gap left by SAA, which since Saturday has withdrawn flights to and from East London.

Although the budget airline's spokesperson was slow to respond to Dispatch queries, Buffalo City Metro celebrated the arrival of Mango with gusto.

Buffalo City Tourism posted on Facebook: “Great news, East London. Mango Airlines will start flying between OR Tambo International Airport and East London Airport from March 1.”

Mayor Xola Pakati, through his spokesperson, Luzuko Buku, welcomed Mango Airlines to BCM.

Buffalo City Tourism said flights would initially be limited to Fridays and Sundays, “but hopefully additional flights will be added soon as the route’s viability is explored”.

Mango is a subsidiary of South African Airways.

Mango spokesperson Sergio Dos Santos had not responded to questions the Dispatch sent to him at the time of going to print.

Buku said: “The executive mayor once again expressed his dismay at the cutting of flights by SAA. He also called on smaller airlines to increase flights to and from East London.

“This is surely welcome and will ease the burden and might trigger the possibility of other airlines flying to the city,” he said.
