Two men are due in court soon after they were nabbed for being in possession of Mandrax with a street value of about R780,000.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said the two, aged 48 and 49, were arrested in Port Alfred. The Mandrax tablets were confiscated.

Govender said there was a high-speed chase on Monday at about 11.45pm after a blue VW Polo overtook a vehicle being driven by Port Alfred K9 Unit members on the R72 between East London and Port Elizabeth.

“The members followed with flashing blue lights and blaring sirens and attempted to stop the vehicle several times but the driver maintained his speed and disregarded the police instructions to stop,” she said.

Govender said the officers managed to stop the speeding car just before a shopping mall on the R72.

“During a search of the vehicle, a large packet containing Mandrax tablets was found in the boot.

“The approximate street value is R780,000. They were arrested on a charge of possession of drugs.”

Govender said the men would appear before the Port Alfred magistrate’s court soon.

Cluster commander Morgan Govender commended the team for their vigilance and speedy response in arresting the two men.

Issuing a stern warning to offenders, he said: “Criminals beware! You will have great difficulty to pass through our coastal town as we have an extremely committed team who work closely with all emergency services.

“So beware and be afraid if you dare to pass our town with drugs.”
