The mass delivery of water tanks to water-scarce areas in the Eastern Cape began in earnest this week.

This follows a directive from human settlements, water & sanitation minister Lindiwe Sisulu for immediate intervention in water-challenged communities across SA amid the fight against the Covid-19 coronavirus.

According to  Sisulu, her department and the department of co-operative governance & traditional affairs (Cogta) adopted a principle of collaboration between provinces and municipalities.

A total of 47 water tankers has been procured and will service priority communities in the Eastern Cape where water shortages are experienced.

More than 1,000 water tanks have been allocated to water-challenged communities in the municipalities of Alfred Nzo, Amathole, Buffalo City, Chris Hani, Joe Gqabi, Makana, Nelson Mandela Bay, OR Tambo and Sarah Baartman.

The first batch of 10 water tanks was delivered to Mbhashe municipality on Saturday to benefit communities in Willowvale, Dutywa and Elliotdale.

Sisulu has called on all water licence users to assist their nearby communities to refill water tanks.

She also urged local municipalities to ensure water tanks provided by the department remained filled at all times.

“I implore borehole drilling companies across the country to extend their helping hand to communities who are in desperate need of water,” Sisulu said.
