Two youths appeared in court in Ngcobo on Tuesday facing charges related to the slaying of a mother and her son last weekend.

Bahle Ngxangane, 21, and Siphelele Rashu, 22, were charged in the Dalasile periodic court with two counts of murder, nine of attempted murder and a charge of arson, said NPA spokesperson Luxolo Tyali.

Nozukile Maramncwa, 62, and her son Masande, 31, were shot and killed at Mdeni village in Ngxoki administrative area near Ngcobo last Friday night. The hut they were sleeping in, together with eight children and Masande's wife, was torched during the attack.

Four children are still in hospital with severe burns. Five other people escaped injury, said Tyali. The case against the two accused was postponed to 25 August for them to secure legal representation and for formal bail application.

“Police are still tracking other suspects and more people are expected to join the two accused for their next court appearance, said Tyali.
